Personal profile
Research Interests
My research is anchored in biodiversity genomics at the population level, with a specific focus on how anthropogenic impacts over the last few centuries have affected a range of plant and animal species. My technical expertise lies in applying genomic and archaeogenomic methods to characterise change in their populations over time.
I have a track record of working in conservation genomics, specifically on endangered island and marine bird species, and fishes (Atlantic sturgeon) In these projects, I have collaborated with NGOs and governmental agencies to produce data relevant to conservation reporting.
My second main field of expertise is plant domestication, a fascinating system for studying evolution and an intersection of plant population biology, ethnobotany and archaeology. I have worked on crop plants from Eurasia (foxtail millet), Africa (date palms, watermelon) and South American (coca, maize, cassava, cocoa).
I am a keen botanist, with experience in plant taxonomy, phylogenomics and fieldwork, with ongoing research in the following plant families: Solanaceae (potato and nightshade), Nymphaceae (waterlilies), Poaceae (grasses), Amaryllidaceae (daffoldils) and Aspleniaceae (spleenwort ferns).
