Personal profile

Biography

I am Associate Professor in Politics at the University of Portsmouth.
Previously, I was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (2019-22), where I participated in the Democracy and Citizenship in Education group and the 2022 International Citizenship and Civic Education project. I completed my PhD at Royal Holloway, University of London (2015). My doctoral thesis explored how EU free movement shapes young people's perceptions of citizenship, identity, and political participation. This research culminated in my monograph The Politics of Mobile Citizenship in Europe published by Palgrave in 2020.

Research Interests

My research takes a political studies perspective to explore issues of citizenship, belonging, and intersectionality (incl. migration, gender, and race/ethnicity), with a primary focus on Europe. Additionally, I am interested in developing more inclusive approaches to and research methods within political sciences.

I am currently collaborating with external colleagues on two related projects. As part of Reading Through project (2022–), alongside Dr Seoyoung Choi (Yonsei University, South Korea) and Dr Olivia Rutazibwa (LSE, UK), we seek to challenge and unlearn disciplinary mastery, Western-centrism, and patriarchy applying a feminist and decolonial lens to political science. With Professor Nicholas Allen (Royal Holloway, UK) and Dr Kenny Ie (University of British Columbia, Canada), we examine the interplay of gender and representation in political excutives (2021–).

I also actively contribute to the wider academic community and currently serve on the following:

1) Co-Editor of Political Studies Review (PSR) - one of the flagship journals of the Political Studies Association  (PSA)

2) Chair of European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) Standing Group on Citizenship

3) Steering Commmittee member of ECPR Standign Group on Identity

4) Co-Lead of the Transnational Politics and Society Research GroupCentre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR))

5) Member of Critical Approaches to Political Science Lab, Yonsei University (Korea)

6) Board member of the ECIT Foundation (Belgium)

Teaching Responsibilities

I contribute to a seires of modules on politics (general, UK, Europe) and research methods across UG and PG politics and IR courses, and as part of school- and university-wide PhD training initiatives.
