Biography

I have lectured at the University of Portsmouth since 1999, having previously been a lecturer at the University of Bath and Manchester Metropolitan University and, before that, a contract researcher at several UK universities.

My administrative responsibilities at the university currently include membership of the Faculty of Business and Law's Faculty Ethics Committee (since 2013) and Chair of this Committee (since 2016)

I have been a member of the Higher Education Academy, the Institute of Welsh Affairs and the British Universities' Industrial Relations Association (BUIRA).  I have been active in BUIRA's Public Sector Study Group.  I was a member of the editorial board of the British Sociological Association journal Work, Employment and Society between 2001-3. Externally, since 2017 I have been a member of the Ethics Committee of Disability Research for Independent Living and Learning (DRILL).

Research Interests

My research interests are varied and have included the following areas: public sector employment relations, especially the impact of privatisation and marketisation; the employment and industrial relations policies of political parties; regional devolution in the UK and employment relations; trade unions in the UK and Europe, especially in relation to the European social model and European single currency; technology and the changing nature of work; internships; the state and industrial relations, e.g. in relation to minimum wage regulation in agriculture; disability and work.  My publications have focused on these areas, in journals such a New Technology, Work and Employment, Industrial Relations Journal, Parliamentary Affairs, Economic and Industrial Democracy and Personnel Review. I am co-editor (with Steve Williams) of Employment Relations under Coalition Government: the UK experience 2010-2015 (Routledge, 2016).
