I have been a member of the Higher Education Academy, the Institute of Welsh Affairs and the British Universities' Industrial Relations Association (BUIRA).  I have been active in BUIRA's Public Sector Study Group.  I was a member of the editorial board of the British Sociological Association journal Work, Employment and Society between 2001-3. Research Interests

My research interests are varied and have included the following areas: public sector employment relations, especially the impact of privatisation and marketisation; the employment and industrial relations policies of political parties; regional devolution in the UK and employment relations; trade unions in the UK and Europe, especially in relation to the European social model and European single currency; technology and the changing nature of work; internships; the state and industrial relations, e.g. in relation to minimum wage regulation in agriculture; disability and work.  My publications have focused on these areas, in journals such a New Technology, Work and Employment, Industrial Relations Journal, Parliamentary Affairs, Economic and Industrial Democracy and Personnel Review. I am co-editor (with Steve Williams) of Employment Relations under Coalition Government: the UK experience 2010-2015 (Routledge, 2016).
