Personal profile


I received my primary university degree in Computer Engineering from South Ural State University, Russia, in 1997 and my MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science from University College Dublin, Ireland, in 1998 and 2004.

Research Interests

My current research is related to developing ICT-based solutions for assisted living and digital wellbeing, also known as welfare technologies or ambient assisted living (AAL).

My other interests include

  • machine learning and pattern recognition;
  • embedded systems;
  • information management and retrieval;
  • computational economics and game theory;
  • computer and networks security.

I have been actively involved in research and knowledge transfer (KTP) activities with industry. Current and past projects cover the areas of assisted living technologies for care homes and residential markets, smart sensors, audio/video switching and streaming, remote monitoring and control. I also carried out industrial consultancy projects in data management for very large-scale data storage systems and sensor characterisation for assisted living applications. I worked as a software engineer developing embedded data communication systems, and participated in European Commission funded industrial and academic project consortia.

Teaching Responsibilities

My current and past taught subjects include computer networks, distributed systems, embedded and real-time systems, computer architecture, machine learning.

I lead and manage the University of Portsmouth Cisco Networking Academy.  I am a certified Cisco Academy instructor.  You can find more information on the Cisco NetAcad website by following the link.
