The self-funded projects to select for a PhD (FT, PT and Distance/Online) are as follows.
-School design: assessing the impacts of biophilia on health and wellbeing
-The potential of biophilic design in schools for addressing the teenage dip in nature connectedness
-Biophilic design of urban spaces in response to climate change and biodiversity loss
-Child friendly cities in connection to nature for young citizens' health and wellbeing
-Biophilic materials: exploring the impacts on air quality, health and wellbeing

Personal profile

Summary

I am a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Interiors at School of Architecture, Art & Design, the University of Portsmouth, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

I joined the University of Portsmouth in 2022, following five years of teaching and research at De Montfort University. Since 2005, I have taught a wide range of subjects for Architecture and Interior Design courses in various Schools of Architecture and Design, including Coventry University, Birmingham City University, Nottingham Trent University, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield.

I have a Doctorate in Architecture, awarded by the University of Sheffield in 2009. I also completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education in 2007, and two Master's degrees - Master of Architecture and MA in Interior Design.

Research Interests

My research and teaching combine interests in design of schools, participatory design with children & youth, biophilic design, and health and wellbeing. I have been involved in organising national and international research events, acting as an External Examiner for PhD and Masters by Research. I have presented my research findings at conferences, worked as a reviewer and guest editor for a number of journals. 

Currently, I am part of the supervisory teams for three PhD students with the following research topics:

  1. Developing Comprehensive Biophilic Design Guidelines for Office Design
  2. Post-pandemic Primary School Design: Assessing the Impacts of Biophilia on Wellbeing and Resilience of Children
  3. Moving Towards Sustainable Smart Cities in the Gulf Cooperation Council Region: Muscat as a case study
