Personal profile

Biography

I am a lecturer in Sociology who joined the Portsmouth in September 2021 following a postdoctoral research post within the Widening Participation Evaluation Team at Oxford Brookes University. Prior to this I was a Doctoral and Associate Tutor at the University of Sussex alongside my PhD. My own doctoral research, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, explored the ways in which first-generation students navigate their educational journey towards Master's degrees and how classed social inequalities shape these pathways. More broadly my research interests encompass inequalities within Higher Education and the labour market, with particular attention to social class, gender and their intersections.

Prior to working within the sector, I was a Research Fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies, working on a range of research projects and evaluations for UK Government Departments and bodies, EU Directorates and third sector organisations.

Teaching Responsibilities

My teaching broadly covers the areas of social inequalities, social justice and research methods. I am currently the module co-ordinator for Social Inequalities (L4) and Equality or Liberation? Theorising Social Justice (L5 and L6). I also teach on Gender and Sexuality (L5 and L6), Developing Your Sociological Imagination (L4), Research Design and Analysis (L4) and Doing Sociological Research (L5).

I am open to supervising postgraduate students (MRes, PhD and EdD) on topics related to social class, gender, higher education inequalities and educational social justice.
