Personal profile

Summary

I am a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Financial Management, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

My areas of interest are corporate social responsibility reporting, sustainability reporting, environmental disclosure practices, risk disclosure, and accounting history. I am experienced in carrying out research and quantitative/qualitative data analysis.

The following three papers are examples of my recent work with academic colleagues:

  1. Can Variations in Temperature Explain the Systemic Risk of European Firms?
  2. Environmental and financial performance in the European manufacturing sector: An analysis of extreme tail dependency
  3. Environmental disclosure and idiosyncratic risk in the European manufacturing sector

I am a member of my faculty's Global Operations Committee. I am the academic contact for our partner institution in Myanmar. I am also responsible for developing contacts between our business school and universities in Russia.

In 2019, with my colleagues Karen McBride and Professor Khaled Husseiney, I secured British Council funding to run an emerging scholars workshop at the University of Portsmouth on sustainability and corporate social responsibility reporting. The workshop was successful, allowing the Russian and UK delegates to develop productive networks and research links.

Biography

I joined the University as a Lecturer in 2016, becoming Senior Lecturer in 2018.

I completed my MSc (Distinction) and my PhD in accounting and finance between 2011 and 2016 at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. My PhD focused on climate change-related disclosures by listed Russian companies.

I am working in the Faculty of Business and Law's global team to establish connections with Russian universities for collaboration on research and teaching.

I was an Admission Tutor for accounting and financial management courses from 2016 to 2019. Since March 2019 I have been the Course Leader and main academic contact for the BA Business and Management degree course that we deliver with the Chindwin-PSB Institute in Myanmar. I enjoy this role because it requires a combination of collaboration and communication skills.

I became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in July 2019.

Research Interests

My interests are corporate social responsibility, environmental and social disclosure, risk reporting, corporate governance, and accounting history.

One of my key research aims is to highlight, to potential company investors, the global importance of environmental disclosures: in terms of their implications for corporate risk and financial performance, for example.

Teaching Responsibilities

I am Module Coordinator for Advanced Financial Reporting. I also teach on this module and on Financial Management. Both modules are accredited by professional accountancy bodies.

I supervise independent study projects, undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and PhD students. I enjoy guiding my students to success.
