As a Teaching Fellow in the Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management subject group, I am passionate about facilitating student learning, whether one-to-one or in group sessions. My blend of practitioner and academic experience enables me to apply theory to practice, and I consistently receive excellent feedback for my enthusiasm, professionalism, and teaching clarity.
My professional background is in HR and Project Management at IBM (UK) Ltd and the University of Southampton, including:
- Implementing a new corporate appraisal and grading system in client groups; designing a UK-wide assignment plan for services professionals; and advising the business management team on transition to a new business model
- Managing a major organisational change project to establish a new School of Health Sciences.
- Developing a suite of new employment procedures for academic staff, including consultation with Trade Union and staff representatives.
- Advising managers on all aspects of the employee lifecycle, including the implementation of a new corporate appraisal and grading system and transition to a new business model.
I have been a Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth since 2019. Extensive prior teaching experience includes six years in Prague, Czech Republic, where I taught at the University of New York in Prague as well as the University of Southampton and Cricklade College.
My academic qualifications include a PhD in Management at the University of Southampton (2015), and MSc Personnel Management (Distinction) at the University of Portsmouth (1998).
I teach currently on a range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including People Resourcing and Talent Management, The HR Practitioner, Research Methods Workshop (MSc Leadership and Management) and The Employee Lifecycle (MSc Global HRM, commencing January 2021). I am also a personal tutor and dissertation supervisor at undergraduate and postgraduate/post-experience levels.
Previously, in Prague, I taught HR in a Global Context and Research Methods (MSc International Business) and a number of Research and Study skills, Management and Leadership and related HRM/OB modules at Prague College from Foundation to MSc level.
Other teaching experience includes module co-ordination and design on Diploma in Management and PgDiploma in HRM courses.
My doctoral research focused on the interplay between personal and organisational values in the management role. I used Critical Incident Technique within a qualitative case study of four organisations with a strong values culture, and analysed the values conflicts and responses enacted by practising managers. I have presented at several international conferences and contributed to Kempster, S. and Carroll, B. (eds.) Perspectives on Responsible Leadership: Romanticism and Realism (2016). London: Routledge.
