Personal profile

My academic and research interest is in how ethics, governance and integrity processes impact the reliability and effectiveness of medical and human participant research. I am seconded to the Health Research Authority as chair of the "Fast Track" research ethics committee (reviewing Phase 1 and other time sensitive clinical trials), and the UK Health Security Agency (formally PHE) as chair of the Research Ethics and Governance Group (REGG). I also chair the Ministry of Defence Research Ethics Committee (MODREC), am a member of the "Human Challenge Trial" specialist ethics committee, and the UK adapting author of the popular Oxford University Press "Research Integrity" online course.

Prior to moving into Bioethics, I gained a first class BSc in Biomedical Science (2001) and a PhD in Biochemistry (2005) from the University of Southampton. I then spent seven years as a post-doctoral fellow working for Professor Sir Mark Pepys FRS at the Centre for Amyloidosis and Acute Phase Proteins at UCL Medical School. During this time our work on a depleter of C-reactive protein was published on the front cover of Nature, and a second project developing small molecules targeting the serum protein Transthyretin was patented and licensed to GSK. I joined the University of Portsmouth in April 2012 as a Senior Fellow and then Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry, receiving a BBSRC project grant exploring immune proteins involved in complement and DNA vaccination. Following further degrees in Philosphy (BA, Open) and Research Ethics (MA, Keele) I moved to a Senior Lecturship in Evidence Based Healthcare in 2017, and then Reader in Bioethics as of September 2021.
