Personal profile

Biography

My academic and research interests are in how concepts of ethics, governance and integrity impact the reliability and effectiveness of medical and human participant research. I am seconded to the Health Research Authority as chair of the "Fast Track" research ethics committee (reviewing time sensitive clinical trials), and the UK Health Security Agency (formally PHE) as chair of the Research Ethics and Governance Group (REGG). I also chair the Ministry of Defence Research Ethics Committee (MODREC) and am a member of the "Human Challenge" specialist ethics committee (NHS). I am the UK adapting author of the popular Oxford University Press "Research Integrity" online course.

Prior to moving into Bioethics, I gained a first class BSc in Biomedical Science (2001) and a PhD in Biochemistry (2005) from the University of Southampton. I then spent seven years as a post-doctoral fellow working for Professor Sir Mark Pepys FRS at the Centre for Amyloidosis and Acute Phase Proteins at UCL Medical School. During this time our work on a depleter of C-reactive protein was published on the front cover of Nature, and a second project developing small molecules targeting the serum protein Transthyretin was patented and licensed to GSK. I joined the University of Portsmouth in April 2012 as a Senior Fellow and then Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry, receiving a BBSRC project grant exploring immune proteins involved in complement and DNA vaccination. Following further degrees in Philosphy (BA, Open) and Research Ethics (MA, Keele) I moved to a Senior Lecturship in Evidence Based Healthcare in 2017, and then Reader in Bioethics as of September 2021.
