Personal profile

Summary

My current research in Naval History focuses on the concept of individual identity as portrayed in published and unpublished naval memoirs, compared with concepts of National Naval Identity from the Crimean War to First World War.

The research also seeks to define the characteristics of a distinctive sub-genre of Naval Memoir within the wider genres of memoir and military memoir, and to consolidate the value of memoir as a core source element within Cultural Naval History.

Underpinning this is an interest in the complex relationships between press, memoir, fiction, censorship and propaganda in military and naval contexts, and the impacts and challenges this holds for Naval Historians.
