Personal profile

Summary

I am a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth. My areas of expertise are management accounting, pensions and taxation. I am a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) and member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. I received my professional training at KPMG.

I have prior experience of working in higher education (HE) gained at Solent University, Southampton, where I was Course Leader for the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA). I managed a team of academic staff and delivered the course to ACCA’s Gold standard.

I also implemented a work-based pensions research project at Solent in 2013, reporting the results to the board and gaining a Distinction for my accompanying Master of Professional Studies (MProf) dissertation on the pensions industry.

My commercial experience includes my role as a Senior Financial Analyst at HSBC. I have also managed the accounting for my partner’s own business since 2003, which means that I bring hands-on practical experience and up-to-date knowledge of best practice to my teaching.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an HE external examiner.

Biography

I joined the University of Portsmouth in 2019. Prior to this I was ACCA Course Leader and Senior Lecturer in Taxation at Solent University for almost 16 years. During which time I demonstrated my ability to organise my academic team, take on challenges, solve problems and manage change. Our course retained the Gold standard for the ACCA Approved Learning Partner programme, plus my teaching on the Chartered Management Institute apprenticeship course scored above the benchmark for student satisfaction.

I was a member of the pensions committee at Solent University, where in 2013 I completed my Master’s, for which I carried out research into engagement with and understanding of pensions amongst university staff.

I worked in banking for 6 years at HSBC, where I held the positions of Planning Manager, Senior Financial Analyst and Financial Controller.

I spent 7 years working for KPMG, one of the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms, where I trained as a chartered accountant. Their high professional standards have been an asset to me throughout my career.

I gained my first degree in business studies at the University of Hertfordshire, followed by a Master’s level Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching at Solent University and then an MProf.

Teaching Responsibilities
