A study to investigate the effectiveness of an oral care training programme for care staff supporting older people in residential care and nursing homes

    Project Details

    Description

Care home managers and carers will complete a questionnaire before completing oral health training to generate an understanding of their existing knowledge, attitudes and practice in relation to the provision of oral care for older people residing in a care home setting.

A member of the research team will allocate all care staff in an individual setting to either option 1 or option 2 oral health training delivery methods.

Option 1: Viewing narrated recordings of the Public Health England Oral Health Toolkit for Adults in Care Homes carers training slides.

Option 2: Attending a face-to-face training session of the Public Health England Oral Health Toolkit for Adults in Care Homes slides.

After completing oral health training, carers will be asked to complete a follow-up questionnaire which measure any self-reported changes in oral care related knowledge, attitudes and practice. There will be additional questions relating to perceptions of improved resident support, training scheduling, delivery method and a free text space so carers can provide their opinions on what went well and what can be improved.
