GB1900 Crowd-Sourced Gazetteer of Britain

    Project Details

    Description

GB1900 aimed to transcribe all place names and other text strings appearing on the full set of Ordnance Survey Six Inch to One Mile (1:10,560) second edition County Series maps, published between 1886 and 1913. This work was done by over 1,000 online volunteers working on the GB1900 web site between September 2016 and January 2018.

    Layperson's description

A thousand volunteers helped us computerise 2.6 million place-names and other items from large scale mapping of the whole of Britain from a hundred or so years ago. The result is a uniquely detailed geographical description of the country: not just every town and village, but particular farms, woods, factories and footpaths.
