Description
This project will 1) improve constraints on rapid ice stream retreat the early Holocene and 2) improve constraints on mid to late Holocene glacier fluctuations. Objectives are to (i) examine rates of ice sheet retreat within Marguerite Bay during the early Holocene, (ii) ascertain the timing of mid to late Holocene glacier fluctuations in Marguerite Bay and on Brabant Island, (iii) use this new chronological data to explore the role of Southern Annular Mode and Southern Westerly Wind variability in driving glacier change and assess the (a)synchronicity of glacier fluctuations across the region, and (iv) use the data as constraints for ice loading in ongoing GIA models.
