Field and Modelling Study to Investigate Cold Air Drainage in Cerdagne, Pyrenees.
Research has been monitoring temperature patterns at 50 locations in the Cerdagne valley in eastern Pyrenees since 2013. This has been used to predict the microclimate variation in the valley and how it relates to larger scale atmospheric circulation patterns. The temperature data is also being used to validate and improve model simulations for weather and climate forecasting over the mountains. Funding is supplied through EU funded project ATMOUNT (P.I. Joan Cuxart) supplying €4350 for fieldwork expenses over three years (2016-2019) but the project has been ongoing for a longer period.
Strong seasonal and diurnal patterns of cold air drainage have been measured. The computer models used for climate prediction over the Pyrenees tend to underestimate this process.
