Online misogyny: new media, old attitudes?

Misogyny online is a relatively new form of hate crime, however law enforcement frequently lacks the training to understand it and, therefore, fails to act on victims' complaints. This faculty-funded strategic project uses a big data approach to the study of the language of cybersexism in social media, where the phenomenon is particularly prevalent, to provide insight into its workings and contribute to the fight against it. The analysis of two social networking websites (4Chan and Reddit) will offer a detailed and systematic account of the linguistic strategies used by misogynist cyberbullies in order to understand the specific features of such intimidation.
