Organising for a socially and ecologically sustainable world: challenges and opportunities of social enterprises in the Portsmouth area

This project investigated the contemporary challenges and opportunities of food social enterprises in the Portsmouth area - for building global justice, sustainable and inclusive communities. The study included two focus groups, bringing together participants from organisational and institutional stakeholders. The findings uncover the key issues food social enterprises are faced with in the Portsmouth area (such as funding, land access, institutional support), and explore possible ways forward with perspectives from institutional stakeholders.

The main findings of this research are that food social enterprises in the Portsmouth area are faced with multifaceted challenges in the post-pandemic aftermath such as lack of tailored support, funding and access to land. There should be multistakeholder collaboration opportunities and a joint-up approach in building sustainable and resilient local food systems and work opportunities.
