This project aimed to create a new website to access a more broadly based historical gazetteer search facility covering the entire world. It ran on our existing server and re-used content from our main website 'A Vision of Britain through Time'.
New content was added as we computerised the Gazetteer of the World, published by Fullerton's in 1856, and scanned and geo-referenced mapping from the International Map of the World as a historical backcloth to go alongside the Open Street Map modern map view. These were then linked to Wikidata entries which formed a spinal gazetteer basis for a historical and modern place search facility including an API, which simplified the information. The project was funded by University of Portsmouth HEIF money.
Initially this system was designed as a replacement for 'A Vision of Britain through Time', but it became increasingly clear this was not feasible given the complexity of the data within that site and the much more limited scope of this website.
The data and interface created for this project are no longer visible. While we retain the data with the hope of including it in the main site in due course there is no planned timetable for this to occur.
