Description
This is a blended learning course to be delivered by a team from the University of Portsmouth to equip youth justice practitioners with essential knowledge and skills in risk assessment.
The course aims to:
- Understand Risk Theory: Through the exploration of foundational theories and concepts of risk assessment, participants will be able to define and explain the social and political context underpinning risk assessment practices in criminal justice. Participants will also be able to define key terms and concepts of risk assessment and risk management.
- Identify and Address Bias: Participants will examine how biases can affect risk assessment technologies and human judgment whilst learn strategies to mitigate these biases and ensure fair and objective risk evaluations.
- Apply Risk Assessment to Real-World Scenarios: Develop practical skills by applying theoretical knowledge to case studies and real-world examples. This includes interpreting risk assessment results and making informed decisions based on these analyses.
- Enhance Practical Decision-Making: Gain insights into integrating risk assessment into daily practices and decision-making processes, ensuring that assessments are used effectively to improve justice outcomes.
- Course Summary: Risk Assessment for Youth Justice Practitioners
This short course is structured in two parts to provide a comprehensive understanding of risk assessment in Youth justice settings:
Part 1: Online Learning Package
Participants will start with an interactive online learning module, allowing them to engage with foundational concepts of risk assessment at their own pace. This self-directed component includes theoretical knowledge, interactive elements, and practical exercises to build a solid understanding of risk theories, biases in risk technology, and real-world applications.
Part 2: Facilitated Workshop
The second part consists of an all-day workshop led by a subject matter expert and a technician. This hands-on session will utilize Hydra, a sophisticated simulation tool, to apply the knowledge gained from the online module. Hydra enables participants to engage in realistic scenario-based training, enhancing their ability to apply risk assessment principles effectively. The workshop will focus on interpreting risk assessment data, addressing biases, and making informed decisions, with expert guidance and real-time feedback.
Benefits of Hydra Training: Hydra provides a dynamic, interactive platform for simulating complex risk scenarios. It enhances learning by allowing practitioners to practice and refine their skills in a controlled, realistic environment. Hydra's simulations help bridge the gap between theory and practice, enabling participants to experience the nuances of risk assessment and decision-making in a practical context. This hands-on approach supports deeper understanding and retention of risk assessment concepts, ultimately improving real-world application and decision-making capabilities.
