Project Details
Description
Inspired by the travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic, this project aimed to create an app that allowed users the mindfulness of travel and exploration without needing to leave the safety of their home. The app works in a similar vein to the "Slow TV" phenomenon, which is "a term used for a genre of 'marathon' television coverage of an ordinary event in its complete length." With the development support of our games student we developed two apps - a 2D web version and a 3D desktop/VR version - plus associated tools for users to create their own routes using the open mapping tool Graphhopper. Both apps use the Google Maps API to pull streetview and map data in real time as the "journey" progresses, and the user can fast forward and rewind, as well as turn through 360 degrees to focus on whichever sights catch their eye.
