Synthetic biology for the development of a novel armour material based upon limpet tooth

    Project Details

    Description

The strongest known biologically occurring composite material is found in teeth from the Common Limpet (Patella vulgata). The overarching theme of this proposal is to scale up production of our biomimetic limpet tooth material to generate sheets that can be used to develop an advanced body armour. The advantages of our limpet tooth-based chitin-goethite compositeinclude mechanical properties and sustainability and self-sufficiency.
