The development of a memory-based lie detection tool

Project Details

Description

In 2015-2017, Vrij received funding from the HIG (DJF-15-1200-V-0010196, $159,501 in 2015; $157,591 in 2016; and $162,318 in 2017) for his memory-based deception project with Drs Mann and Leal as part-time SRFs.

Key findings

In three experiments, participants were interviewed immediately after a target event or after a three-week delay. Truth tellers reported fewer details after a delay (cf. immediately) whereas lie tellers reported equivalent detail at both retrieval intervals. Listening to a model statement made lie tellers provide more details than truth tellers after a delay but had no effect in immediate interviews.
