The central question of this research is: What is the relationship between (chronic) pain and the risk of ceasing work and entering retirement?
We have learned so far that musculoskeletal pain is associated with an increased risk of ceasing work and retiring at an earlier age, beyond levels of work dissatisfaction, higher perceived social status, female gender, and not receiving the recognition they felt they deserved in their job. Further investigations will explore the mechanisms behind these initial findings.
