Understanding and addressing the nasty effect in online discussions about geological nuclear waste disposals

    Project Details

    Description

This mixed-methods programme of studies will shed theoretically-informed light on: (a) how information about geological nuclear waste disposal propagates in an online environment; (b) how perceptions of risk are shaped by the (in-)civility of the social-media commentary affiliated with this information; and (c) how social media users might be inoculated against this ‘nasty effect’ via a simple, media-literacy intervention. The findings will map the nature of public discourse about geological nuclear waste disposal (including GDFs) in the UK and, in doing so, will be invaluable for those designing communication and public engagement materials pertaining to the technology, including Nuclear Waste Services.
