Unethical practices and its impact in the provision of affordable housing in developing countries

Affordable housing, especially in developing countries, is vital for social and economic wellbeing. A lack of it can fuel poverty, crime, disease, inflated housing costs, and poor living standards. To address this, the United Nations introduced Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to ensure access to safe, sustainable, and affordable housing for all by 2030. With a projected population of about 228 million, coupled with high demand in sustainable affordable housing, both in quantity and quality, and the need to meet the UNSDG 11 by 2030, there is a need to understand the transparent nature of the housing provision process, the key barriers hindering the successful provision of affordable housing in Nigeria in order to address the serious issue of housing deficits and be able to meet the UNSDG target. Thus, the objectives of this project are to: (1) identify indicators of corruption/inefficiency in the public housing provision process; (2) assess and analyse completed housing projects to identify root causes of corruption/inefficiency; and (3) suggest improvements to data collection and measurement processes for better quantification and analysis of these issues.
