Project Details
Description
This project aims to validate the exciting physical employment standards for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and provide guidance on health and fitness to all Coastguard Rescue Officers (CROs). This work will provide the MCA with an evidence-based selection process that significantly ensures CROs have the physical capability to perform their job tasks. When combined with the bespoke health and fitness guidance, this initiative will strengthen the duty of care offered to CROs, effectively minimising the risk of injury and optimising physical performance during rescue scenarios. The impact of these improvements will not only ensure the safety of personnel but also enhance the overall effectiveness of rescue operations. The initial phase involves a re-evaluation of the essential tasks that underpin the MCA fitness standard for CROs. The aim is to assess whether any modifications in equipment and methodologies employed for the job have led to alterations in the physical requirements. The second phase will determine the physical requirements of water rescue. The objective to ascertain whether the current fitness standard adequately addresses the physical demands associated with this task. By considering the outcomes of these first two phases, the project will proceed to propose necessary updates to the MCA fitness standard, as deemed appropriate. For the final phase the MCA will receive resources aimed at facilitating the implementation and oversight of the fitness standard. Additionally, these materials will offer health and fitness guidance tailored to coastguard rescue officers.
