Project Details
Description
The X-Press Pearl disaster occurred in May 2021 when the cargo ship caught fire off Sri Lanka's coast, spilling hazardous chemicals, plastic pellets, and oil. The incident caused widespread environmental damage, contaminating marine ecosystems, beaches, and fishing zones, and is considered one of the worst maritime environmental disasters. Working with Oil Spill Response Ltd (OSRL), this project will explore the potential of using enzymes to convert the waste plastic nurdles recovered from Sri Lankan beaches into harmless, environmentally-benign compounds.
