Abstract
Photographic works included in the group exhibition 'State of Affairs' curated by Ora Lev and assistant curator Tali Romem.
The works included are: holes (בורות, حفر), gelatin silver print (2014), רשומים (drawings, رسم), gelatin silver print (2016), and א (x), gelatin silver print (2015).
Traces encountered in the landscape offer myriad of associations and connotations between sites, contexts and their photographic representation. These images experiment with the fluid space between photography and sculpture, drawing and photography, and images and words. In the desert landscape, shaped by ongoing conflict and occupation, traces of human presence mark the ground and emerge over time, fleetingly re-appear, or permanently scar the surface. Photography becomes the means to observe and record these multi-layered nuances of conflict as it registers in the landscape and reverberates through language.
From the Exhibition Statement by curator Ora Lev:
"In Morel Derfler’s photograms, one may discern a line marking the ground. There is little terrain above it, and multiple depth layers below, teeming with action, containing an element of reality with conspicuous signs of conflict. Derfler, an artist and a lecturer at the Musrara School, was killed in a suicide bombing at the Nahariya train station in 2001. The exhibition was constructed as a dialogue with his oeuvre. The featured works examine the way we observe the local space and formulate a narrative for ourselves, characterized by slow, gradual refinement of the gaze at the geopolitical sphere in Israel."
