    Abstract

רישומים, رسم (drawings, sketches) is a photographic project created between 2016-2022.

The mountains of the Judean desert, in the West Bank, the Occupied Territories of Palestine, are inhabited and frequented by people. The political dimensions of conflict, surveillance, access and restrictions can remain almost unseen in this desert landscape, and yet they echo with every silent observation, in the distant sounds and frequent presence of human beings and the traces they leave behind. The impressions on the ground, resembling sketches or scratches, are caught between suggestive natural, playful and violent formations.

The title in Hebrew could be translated into English as a 'drawing', a 'sketch' or 'scores of lines'. In its Arabic translation رسم could also mean 'to delineate', to 'outline' and 'to mark'. In this landscape, the changes of light during the day reveal and conceal the depth of the marks – the light flooding the hills in the morning, violently hitting the ground at midday and fading away with gentle strokes in the evening, casting a growing shadow on the slopes.
