    Abstract

The analysis of the statistics of marriage drawn from the Registrar General's annual reports forms part of research on the origins of the depressed areas of Britain financed by the Leverhulme Trust. The analysis of the Bolton parish register was supported by a Small Personal Research Grant from the British Academy. Earlier versions of this article were presented to the Social Science History Association, the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure, the Liverpool University Institute for European Population Studies, and the All Souls Quantitative Economic History Workshop. We are particularly grateful to Tim Hatton, Paul Johnson, Roger Schoneld, and David Vincent for their help and suggestions.
