    Abstract

This chapter describes a recent empirical study into the motivations of UK fishermen to comply with or to violate catch limits. Before we outline the theoretical background to the study, however, it is worth looking in more general terms at the 'social dilemma' of the fishing industryfrom an economic perspective.
