Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education is transforming leadership in decision-making, policy development, and innovation. This exploratory research highlights the need for educational leaders to have AI literacy that goes beyond technical skills to include ethical awareness and understanding AI’s potential impact. Leaders proficient in AI can better drive innovation and manage ethical challenges. Using mixed methods, this study examines current AI literacy levels among higher education leaders and its link to leadership effectiveness. Results show that AI engagement varies, influenced by institutional culture, and underscore the importance of equipping leaders with AI skills for informed, data-driven decisions. The study identifies barriers to AI literacy and stresses the need for professional development and institutional support. The findings open the door for further research into targeted strategies and long-term impacts of AI literacy on educational leadership, policy, and innovation. Additionally, the research offers strategies to help policymakers and educational leaders adapt to an AI-driven future with confidence and foresight.
