Beyond rationality: presenting an intuitive method for addressing uncertainty

Abstract

Drawing upon the work of Henri Bergson as interpreted by Giles Deleuze, we present an intuitive method for addressing uncertainty. This method comprises a sequence of three steps that challenges the assumptions underlying the way uncertain situations are framed, looks for contradictions in those situations and contextualises that situation within both the current milieu and over time. Consequently, uncertainty is preserved and addressed on its own terms as a phenomenon characterised by change and novelty. As such, the intuitive method is presented as both an alternative and a complement to current approaches to decision making under uncertainty which, while intuitive in origin, privilege a rational method that treats uncertainty as a thing to be categorised and converted into more a more manageable form and, as such, do not preserve or address uncertainty on its own terms.
