Negative interpersonal behaviour by managers and colleagues at work has received limited attention to date. This paper focuses on a specific type of negative behaviour at work, that of bullying, which has seen a growth in research in recent years. Much of this work to date can be characterised as establishing that the phenomenon exists and that it has a negative effect on people. In addition, bullying has been shown to have a negative effect on organisations as many people leave their jobs in order to resolve their situation. In this paper, methods of persuading those in power within organisations to attend to this issue are presented and discussed. The concept of 'incompetences' within organisations is put forward, the effects of which go beyond a straightforward cost-benefit approach.
