N2 - This chapter involves bringing together the work of a number of film theorists in order to consider aspects of transnational film cultures that are often taken in isolation. I then apply their findings, where possible, to my own area of expertise, Latin American cinema, and more specifically to my current research area, the work of contemporary ‘Mexican’ directors, Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro, and, to a lesser degree, Carlos Reygadas. s needed in the theorising of ‘transnational cinema’. My aim in the chapter is to deconstruct the label and identify specific categories to help prevent the vagueness and conflations that the use of the term appears to invite.
