    Abstract

This is the original English text, unpublished, of a book chapter published only in French, as "Les Multiples Dimensions de la Misere: les manifestations de la pauvrette d’origine economique en Grande-Bretagne, a la fin de la periode Victoriene". It is a systematic account both of statistical sources for the study of economic distress and of the geography of distress, covering trade union unemployment statistics, variations in hours of work and wage rates, the Poor Law, small debt data and the marriage rate.
