Abstract
A misinformation effect occurs if misleading post-event information is incorporated into the memory report. The present information processing model of the misinformation effect incorporates both memory and social psychological assumptions and is able to integrate a large number of findings from both areas. Of particular importance within the model are the variables uncertainty, metacognitive inference, and social influence. The model describes the interaction of these variables and makes predictions as to whether and because of which processes false memories develop.
