Abstract

Learner autonomy refers to taking responsibility for one's own learning and the use of self-regulation strategies. It is not an innate ability but an acquired one, which often requires teacher guidance. This paper focuses on the design and development of the Scale of Pedagogical Strategies for Learning Autonomy (EEPAA, by its acronym in Spanish). A sample of 590 Mexican teachers, mostly from high school and university contexts, took part in the study. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used. Items were grouped into three factors: 1) students’ perspective, 2) meaningful rationales, and 3) acceptance of criticism. These factors correlate positively and significantly with each other. The final version of the scale has 24 items and high internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.977). EEPAA helps to identify teaching styles and approaches that support learner autonomy. A high EEPAA score suggests a high number of pedagogical strategies used to develop students' learning autonomy.
