Abstract

The sociology of evaluation or evaluative judgments, which has as its focus an analysis of how we appraise things, is a relatively neglected area of inquiry. This is perhaps because, as Austin Harrington points out, sociologists have a tendency to put aside questions of value, leaving them to other disciplines. In this entry, several debates in the sociology of evaluation are outlined. These include critical sociological reflections on aesthetics as well as attempts to formulate a new sociology of evaluative judgments.
