Abstract

This paper presents a novel extended digital image correlation (EDIC) method for mapping multiscale damage in concrete. The EDIC method is developed based on the distance transformation algorithm, which extends the capability of current digital image correlation (DIC) in detecting microdamage. Applications of the EDIC in mapping multiscale damage in concrete specimens are given in this paper, which proves the capability of the EDIC in detecting such damage. This novel EDIC technology can be used for further research on material damages and for improving safety assessment through detection of microdamage in industrial applications.
