Abstract

The emergence of sport management as a recognised academic field reflects a gradual evolution from informal athletic administration into a globally established and multidisciplinary discipline. Over the past six decades, sport management has developed from roots in physical education and volunteer governance into a field shaped by business, sociology, psychology, law and education. This progression has been driven by the professionalisation, commercialisation and globalisation of sport, alongside the growth of formal degree programmes and professional associations that have helped to define its academic and industry standing. From the 1990s onwards, sport management education expanded rapidly, reflecting the increasing complexity of the global sport industry and the emergence of specialised subfields such as sport marketing, governance, analytics, entrepreneurship and athlete development. Contemporary sport organisations now operate within highly dynamic environments influenced by technological change, sustainability imperatives, shifting labour markets and growing expectations around diversity, equity and inclusion. In response, sport management educators have increasingly adopted pedagogical approaches that emphasise experiential learning, student-centred design, constructivism and critical and transformative education. These approaches support the development of graduates who are not only technically and professionally competent, but also ethically grounded, adaptable and capable of leading within a complex global sport ecosystem
