Abstract

The chapter initially summarises the similarities and differences in elite referee structures and provision in England, Spain, Italy and also UEFA and FIFA. The chapter also discusses possible adaptations that could occur in refereeing as the game evolves. Major findings that have emerged are documented, including a number of recommendations for the development of elite referee training and preparation. In particular, the chapter considers key similarities and differences between the leagues, the introduction and further use of technology and the implications for referees, the use of the controversial five-official system and key recommendations, actions and outcomes.
