Abstract
Just before her reshuffle from Home to Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper made a noble-sounding pledge to expedite visas and in other ways help prospective students from Gaza to relocate safely to the UK and study at universities here. The decision has come after months of work by the ‘Gaza40’ campaign – a coalition of academics, trades unionists, lawyers and activists – in the face of indifference, inefficiency and double standards.
However, Cooper’s announcement on September 1st was seriously short of detail; so far no timetable has been proposed for evacuating the students, nor is it clear who exactly is eligible for it, given the various scholarships and opportunities offered.
