Abstract

This chapter considers the ongoing development of the referee. Particular attention is paid to the introduction and evolution of the training and assessment that referees have received over time and the major changes that have affected these provisions. Also discussed are the emerging relationships between referees and the major organisations that have influenced referees in England historically, namely the FA, the Referees’ Association and the Football League. The developments in referee training, assessment and support structures since the end of the First World War and throughout the twentieth century provide an insight into the approach taken to refereeing by these organisations.
