Abstract

This short historical discussion looks at the motivation for working with offenders whilst in custody, at the same time making some reference to the parallel of working with offenders in the community. These points raise questions with regard to the role and purpose of prisons and punishment in Britain, not only historically but also in contemporary Britian.
