Abstract
Although humour has been the subject of study in various disciplines, including education, virtually no research, as far as we are aware, has investigated the effects of teacher-initiated humour in English for academic purposes (EAP). This paper reports on some research done as part of a PhD program, in which we explored the types of humour used and their effects, as well as teachers’ and students’ beliefs about humour in the EAP context.
