    Abstract

This chapter retraces the history of housing evolution in Seoul during the twentieth century, focusing on the relationship between the informal settlements and the large housing complexes that have proliferated in South Korea since the 1970s. The aim is to investigate the originally spontaneous low-rise multi-functional areas, and their role in providing a diversified urban program to allow the mono-functional housing projects to existing. This coexistence of two different urban settlements has evolved throughout recent decades, and it has eventually established an urban model that is representative of South Korean cities.
