Abstract

The introduction to this edited book sets out the overall purpose of the volume, which is to capture the key issues, debates and initiatives in United Kingdom policy and practice relating to the mental health and wellbeing of doctoral researchers from a range of disciplinary and institutional perspectives. It explores some of the key concepts relating to mental health and wellbeing and discusses the role, status and terminology relating to doctoral researchers. It then provides an overview of the chapters in the collection, making explicit the links between the contributions and identifying the common themes that have emerged. It concludes by collating and summarising the recommendations made by the authors of the chapters in this collection as a manifesto for action by institutional leaders and policy-makers.
