Abstract
This paper explores the issues that surround the PhD supervisory activity and attempts to draw some tentative conclusions about points that may enhance the likelihood of a good outcome and identification of indicators that may provide early warning of problems. In addition, the potential for conflict between the constraints imposed by regulatory requirements and the tradition of academic freedom and flexibility are investigated.
