Abstract
The Onsdorf well brought a continuously cored section of the uppermost part of the Lower Muschelkalk (Dolomitbankschichten) from the western margin of the Germanic Basin. The shallow water deposits are rich in sedimentary organic matter, showing characteristic palynofacies patterns. Lithology, sedimentary structures and palynofacies signatures indicate a change from normal marine to hypersaline environments in the uppermost Dolomitbankschichten. Comparisons of thicknesses and facies patterns allow a reconstruction of the basin evolution in the southern part of the Eifel Depression. A first sequence stratigraphic interpretation is discussed, correlating stratigraphic units with 3rd order systems tracts recognized in the central part of the Germanic Basin.
